Meet the Reed Cormorant: One of Ntsinini's Expert Fishermen

When people think about fishing at Ntsinini, they often picture trout rising in the dams or yellowfish holding in the fast-flowing waters of the Elands River. What many visitors don't realise is that they're sharing these waters with one of nature's most skilled anglers, the Reed Cormorant.

Recently spotted perched on a riverside rock, this remarkable bird is a familiar sight along many South African rivers and dams. Patient, agile, and perfectly adapted to life on the water, the Reed Cormorant is one of the many bird species that call Ntsinini home.

A Master Underwater Hunter

Unlike birds that hunt from the air, Reed Cormorants dive beneath the surface in pursuit of their prey. Using powerful feet to propel themselves through the water, they chase small fish with surprising speed and precision.

After a successful hunt, you'll often see them resting on a rock or fallen branch, drying their feathers in the sun before returning to the water. Their feathers are less waterproof than those of ducks, allowing them to dive more efficiently, but they need time to dry between fishing trips.
